  13.           One of three small ovens on an experiment aboard
  14. NASA's 
  15.   
  16. Viking 2 Lander apparently did not operate during recent
  17. checkout 
  18.   
  19. tests of the instrument. 
  20.   
  21.           A study of the data from the tests showed that oven
  22. 1 
  23.   
  24. either failed to heat or that data from a timing device is
  25. faulty. 
  26.   
  27. Telemetry from the timer indicates whether or not an oven is
  28. on. 
  29.   
  30.           The problem with the oven did not affect the
  31. operation of 
  32.   
  33. the experiment which worked well throughout the test. 
  34.   
  35.           Project officials are assuming that oven 1 did not
  36. turn on 
  37.   
  38. but will not be sure until the operation of the oven, on
  39. Mars, with 
  40.   
  41. a soil sample. 
  42.   
  43.           The ovens will heat Martian soil samples to 932`F
  44. to identify 
  45.   
  46. chemical processes in the soil and determine if organic
  47. materials exist 
  48.   
  49. in the soil that would indicate the possibility of life forms
  50. on the 
  51.   
  52. planet, either in the past or at present. 
  53.   
  54.           The experiment is separate from the three Viking biology experi- 
  55.   
  56. ments which will make direct tests for life in the Martian
  57. soil.

  59.           The possible loss of one oven means that only two
  60. soil samples 
  61.   
  62. will be tested instead of three and will not affect the
  63. operation of 
  64.   
  65. the experiment.

  85.           The experiment's instrument is a Gas Chromatograph
  86. Mass 
  87.   
  88. Spectrometer, a complex device used in laboratories on Earth
  89. for 
  90.   
  91. molecular analysis.  The compact flight version of the
  92. instrument 
  93.   
  94. was specially designed for the Viking project. 
  95.   
  96.           The experiment will also identify modules in the
  97. Martian 
  98.   
  99. atmosphere but this part of the experiment does not require
  100. the ovens.

  102.           The two Viking spacecraft, launched in August and
  103. September, 
  104.   
  105. will reach Mars on June 19 and August 7.  The first Lander
  106. will be 
  107.   
  108. detached from the Viking Orbiter and descend to the surface in the 
  109.   
  110. first week of July.  Lander 2 wil1 descend during the first
  111. week in 
  112.   
  113. September.  Each Lander carries a full compliment of
  114. identical experi-
